Roles and responsibilities of the surgical technician

Although the surgeon takes prime responsibility of the operating room and during the surgery, the surgical technician plays an important role. Surgical technicians assist in a wide variety of operating procedures. Not only in checking the conditions of the equipments but also in checking the vital signs and transportation of the patient to and from the operating room. This field of work involves supervision of the surgeon or a registered nurse. The following are the duties of a surgical technician:

o Prepares the surgery room by setting up the equipment and sterilizing materials to be needed n the surgery.

o Make sure that all the equipments are in good condition. Assembly and repair of the equipment is necessary if it is not functioning well.

o Prepares the patient for surgery.

o Transportation of the patient to the operating room and to the recovery/anesthesia unit post operatively.

o During the operation, the technician assists the surgeon by handling instruments to be used. This is supervised by a registered nurse.

o Post operatively, the surgical technician provides patient’s needs and comfort which includes taking of vital signs.

o The surgical technician also maintains safety in the operating room which includes disinfecting the surrounding prior and after each procedure.

Surgical technicians should be alert at all times. Procedures and surgeries consume a lot of time which can be tiring. The technician should withstand through this circumstances.

Surgical technician schools and training.

Surgical technician courses are offered in colleges, vocational programs, and even in hospitals. Usually it takes up to 1-2 years to finish this course. Interested applicants are required to at least finish high school in order to enroll in such course. During the training, students are taught in both classroom and clinical setting. Subjects include anatomy and physiology, microbiology, professional ethics, and some medical terminologies. Students are also taught about safety and care for the patient. Upon graduation, individuals are required to pass a national certification examination where they are then titled as Certified Surgical Technologists.  In order to maintain this title, they are required to enroll in continuing education and go through a renewal process every four years.
Salaries depends on certain conditions such as experience and trainings. The median annual salary for surgical technicians in 2006 was $36,080, and a 24 percent increase in jobs in this field is expected by the year 2016.
